The elements can be put together in various ways. For example, a lap join may be held by a fillet, plug,or slot weld, and and a tee joint by a fillet or groove weld. The nature of the joint depends upon the kind and size of material, the process, and the strength required. Meterial less than 0.25mm thick is usually lapped; thicker material is commonly butted. Butt joints are prepared for high-strength steels because they are more easily inspected and involve simpler stress patterns than lap joits. Lap joints are best for most pressure and resistance welding of sheets and for eletron beam welding where no filler metal is added.
